Jammu and Kashmir agriculture minister Ghulam Hassan Mir today said there were abundant stocks of fertilisers available in the valley and stressed the need for strengthening the co-operative movement in the state.

"At present there is stocking of around 3,400 metric tonnes of fertilizers as against previous year's 2,600 metric tonnes", Mir said addressing a fertilisers' conference here.

Mir said chief agriculture officers in each district have been authorised to issue distribution licenses so that every village has at least one fertiliser-sale unit which also deals with pesticides and agriculture equipments.

He suggested devising an annual calendar of agriculture activities in the state so that farmers get fertilisers and seeds in time.

Stressing the need to strengthen the co-operatives in the state Mir said co-operative movement is imperative for the development of the state and the farming community.

He assured the fertiliser distributors that he would get the demand of revision of freight and other issues examined by the Registrar of Co-operatives.
