A group of social activists and artistes, including Mahesh Bhatt and Prashant Bhushan, today condemned the detention of Gujarat riot victims who were protesting against the fast of the state's Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

"We believe that curbing people's right to peacefully protest is a suppression of democracy and condemn this unjust action by the Gujarat State Government," the activists said in a statement here.

The signatories of the statement include filmmaker Bhatt, lawyer Bhushan, theatre personality Arvind Gaur and activists Arvind Kejriwal, Arundhati Dhuru, Sandeep Pandey and Shazia Ilmi.

They termed the detention as undemocratic.

Yesterday, Gujarat Police detained more than 50 activists and riot victims including Mallika Sarabhai, Mukul Sinha, Shamshad Pathan and others at Naroda Patiya preventing them from holding a silent protest against Modi's Sadbhavna fast.
