Ahmedabad woman died of swine flu, toll reaches 29

Meanwhile, swine flu cases in the country today registered a record as 220 people tested positive for the viral disease, the highest for a single day so far.

Swine flu claimed another life as a woman who died in Ahmedabad was found to be suffering from the disease, taking the toll in the country to 29.

Anandiben Patel (37) died of H1N1 infection in a private hospital there where she was admitted on August 11 with respiratory distress syndrome. She died on August 13 but only late last night it was confirmed that swine flu was the cause of her death, health officials in that city said.

Meanwhile, swine flu cases in the country today registered a record as 220 people tested positive for the viral disease, the highest for a single day so far.

With this, the total number of people afflicted with the viral disease rose to 1927.

Mumbai led the list with 90 cases followed by Pune at 42, Chennai (20), Ahmedabad (16), Bangalore (11), Delhi (7), Nashik (5), Ahmadnagar (4), Osmanabad (4), Jammu (4), Nagpur (3), Raipur (3), Kolkata (3), Udupi (3) and Washim (2).

One case each was reported from Aurangabad (1), Jalna (1)], Belgaum (1), a senior Health Ministry official said.

Except for two cases in Mumbai who have foreign travel history -- one to UK and another to Thailand -- all other cases reported today are indigenous cases with no foreign travel history.

Today the highest number of people tested positive for swine flu on a single day, the official said. 

"A total of 9,904 people have been tested so far out of which 1,927 are positive for swine flu. Of the 1927 positive cases, 703 have been discharged," the official said.

A central team is stationed in Maharashtra to assist the State Government in instituting appropriate public health measures, he added.
