On Friday, one Laxmiben Mandora approached Naranpura police and sought help to get her daughter Jyoti, who has been living with Minaben Khori at Sindarva village near Odhav. HB Jamod, Sr police inspector of Naranpura rushed to the residence of Khori with Laxmiben and took custody of Jyoti, who is now 7 years old and known by her new name, Puja.

Laxmi and her husband Naran Mandora live at a slum settlement near Subhash Bridge and sell idols and cricket bats, respectively, for a living. On January 6, 2008, Laxmi filed a NC complaint at Naranpura police about her youngest daughter Jyoti, who had gone missing near their house. Jyoti, who was 3 years old at that time, was seen with two men by other locals minutes before she went missing.

Laxmi lost all hopes of finding her daughter but she started sharing her pain with another hawker, Minaben Khori, 60, who also sell cricket bats. Since they were in the same business, the women became good friends.

Three days back, Laxmi went to Sindarva village to purchase bats but couldn't find any trader on that day. So she went to Minaben's house to rest. In a casual way, Minaben asked for details of Jyoti and Laxmi told her that Jyoti had a fracture on her right leg when she 'disappeared'. Suddenly, Minaben told Laxmi that her son Mahesh had brought an orphan girl six months back from his friend Kadar, who couldn't raise her properly. According to Minaben, they have been raising that girl and named her Puja and got her admitted to a primary school.

Mina asked her son Mahesh to bring Jyoti home from school. After seeing the girl in front of her eyes, Laxmi immediately confirmed that she is Jyoti. The child also recognized her mother -- after 4 years -- and gave her a hug. But Minaben refused to give her to Laxmi and so the latter sought help of Naranpura police.

The police have detained Mina and her son Mahesh to find out how Jyoti landed in their house. "According to them, the girl reached them via many persons, including some women, who gave her to Mahesh's friend Kadar. We will not hesitate to book anyone found guilty of kidnapping her," said Jamod. As a token of appreciation, the in-charge state DGP Chitranjan Singh has decided to felicitate Jamod for his excellent work.
