A day after West Bengal state education minister Partha Chatterjee declared that a university will be set up in Murshidabad district — the district’s first university, leaders of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) claimed credit for the same in a meeting held on Saturday.
“Political leaders had been fooling Muslims of the state so far — just promising them the moon ahead of elections and then depriving them. They are afraid that AIMIM has started talking about the rights of Muslims whom they used as a vote bank to get the throne. They made this announcement (regarding setting up a university) four days after we conducted our first public meeting here demanding that there should be a university in Murshidabad,” said AIMIM national spokesperson Syed Asim Waqar.
He also said that it was only the beginning and once they made their organisation strong enough in Bengal they would be making all the rightful demands for Muslims in Bengal.
“Muslims comprise 40 per cent of the votes in Bengal so they should get 40 per cent benefits as well. When we come to power in Bengal, we will ensure that there are 120 Muslim MLAs in the state Assembly,” Waqar said.
Buoyed by the development, AIMIM members have decided on another meeting on March 4 to spread the word.
