Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Daljeet Singh Chaudhary on Sunday said they have identified the perpetrators responsible for the violence at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus late last night.
"A violent incident took place here last night in which one person succumbed to bullet injury and the other is critically injured. The police reached the spot immediately after getting the news. We are acting in accordance with the university officials. Those behind this crime have been identified, an FIR has also been lodged and we would soon be able to nab the masterminds," Chaudhary told ANI.
"The Rapid Action Force has been deployed at all sensitive spots especially in view of the entrance test for the engineering college scheduled today," he added.
Chaudhary further said the police is getting full support from the AMU officials during their investigation.
An AMU official earlier said that trouble between rival groups belonging to Azamgarh and Sambhal regions has been simmering since quite some time now.
Meanwhile, AMU PRO Rahat Abrar said the situation in the campus is normal now. "Security has been tightened so that exams can be conducted peacefully. We're taking this matter seriously and strict action will be taken against those involved in the incident," he said.
