Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has a narrow escape after his helicopter crashed in Gurdaspur district on Tuesday.

CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh and his two cabinet colleagues, Pratap Singh Bajwa and Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, had a miraculous escape on Tuesday when a helicopter they were travelling on crash landed in Gurdaspur district after it hit power cables. All the passengers were safe after the crash, while the chopper was badly damaged.

Senior officials here termed it a “serious security lapse” which could have proved devastating had the electric wires been live.

This is the second time Amarinder Singh is meeting with a chopper accident. In 2005, a chopper he was travelling in collided with a tree near Pinjore, about 15 kms from here.

On Tuesday as the helicopter was about to take off from Rajova village, where the chief minister had inaugurated a 66 KV power station, it hit power cables over a tube well at an approximate height of 12 feet and crash landed in a paddy field. None of the six passengers in the chopper was hurt as it landed in slush.
