Finally, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has woken up to the need to spread awareness about swine flu.
As part of its information measures, it plans to put up hoardings and distribute posters and pamphlets about swine flue in municipal schools among others.
Chief medical official at the AMC, SP Kulkarni said they will start distributing pamphlets at public functions to make people aware about swine flu.
Kulkarni was talking to DNA on the sidelines of a meeting organised at the Gandhi Hall at AMC Danapith office to educate AMC officials and corporators about swine flu.
Responding to a power point presentation on swine flu, some of the corporators came up with certain preventive measures that the civic body can use.
Some also mentioned about the need for an educational drive on swine flu.
Former mayor and Vasna corporator Amit Shah said there was need to regularly change the water at the municipal swimming pools.
“I am a regular swimmer at the municipal swimming pools. There are at least 700 people in the swimming pool. Swine flu might spread from the water in the pool. I request the municipal commissioner to find a solution for the problem,” Shah said.
He said either people should be made aware about the disease or the water should be changed more frequently.
Leader of opposition in AMC, Surendra Baxi said there was a need to educate people in slum areas as 40% of the city’s population lived in slums. “Their ignorance may lead to further spread of the disease,” he said.
