Losing weight is not easy and to lose 108 kilos is a tremendous achievement.

Absolutely everyone is bowled over by Anant Ambani’s dramatic weight loss. The 21-year-old lad has reportedly shed a mind-blowing 108 kilos in 18 months and it's an impressive achievement. Here's how he achieved the impossible.

Why was Anant Ambani obese?

It appears that Anant was suffering from a medically-induced obesity, caused due to strong medication he was prescribed due to his chronic asthma.

How much weight did he lose?

The scion of the Ambani family allegedly lost 108 kilos in 18 months, which at 6 kilos per month is a healthy amount of weight to lose. Losing too much weight too quickly can affect the immune system and that’s why it’s important to do it at a medium pace.

How did he do it?

Despite rumours about him undergoing a gastric bypass surgery, reports suggest that he did it the natural way, following a strict diet and exercising rigorously. The youngster used to exercise 5-6 hours a day and his regime included a 21-km walk, yoga, weight training, functional training and high-intensity cardio exercises. Each of the aforementioned exercise forms helps the body in different ways.

Let's analyse each of these exercise forms

Low Slow Cardio

The 21-km walk is a great form of low-slow cardio, and is the only option for someone who is extremely obese. It’s a great way to get started and get rid of the initial fat and also because other intense forms of exercise regimes might be too strenuous for the body.

Weight Training

Weight training (also known at times as strength training or resistance training) is equally important for weight loss, despite the myth that lifting doesn’t help you lose weight.

Fitness icon and Hrithik Roshan’s trainer Kris Gethin wrote in his book The Bodybuilding.com Guide To Your Best Body, “When you start training regularly with weights, your muscles develop, become denser, and burn more calories all day and night. Though cardio is a great way to assist in fat loss, it burns fat only while you’re performing the exercise, not around the clock. Lifting weights and adding lean muscle, on the other hand, turns your body into a full-time calorie-burning machine. If you were to add just 5 pounds of muscle to your frame, you could burn an additional 250 to 300 calories per day—that’s a whole meal for some people!”

Yoga

Similarly, yoga has immense benefits. Yoga not only helps you lose weight but also improves one’s overall health. A study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that practising yoga can actually help promote mindful eating and it can be performed even by obese people, thanks to its low-intense nature.

Anant Ambani: Before and After

Functional training

Functional training refers to exercises that are similar to daily movements you’d carry out every day and involves a combination of exercises to strengthen one’s core, leg muscles and upper body. It leads to better joint stability, flexibility, balance and agility. Common exercises include weight-bearing exercises and stretches.

High-intensity cardio exercises or HIIT

High-intensity cardio exercises also known as high intensity interval training is another great way to target stubborn fat areas (abdomen area for men, thighs and arms for women). It’s like regular cardio but with intervals of intense exercise and rest. So instead of jogging on the treadmill at 8km/h for 15 minutes, one breaks up that exercise into intervals of low-intensity exercise (walking at 5km/h for 2 minutes) and high-intensity exercise (sprinting at 10km/h). This helps fire up your body’s metabolism, and it makes one’s body a fat burning machine, shedding weight even after a person is done exercising.

He also followed a zero-sugar, low-carb diet along with adequate fat and protein.

Mummy’s happy

His mother Nita was particularly pleased with her son’s regime and she is said to have been floored by her son’s effort and results. She was quoted saying that his determination and power was an inspiration to all, including herself.
