Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan called upon trainee police officers today, to use their powers to safeguard society and not for 'selfish' purposes.
Speaking at the passing out parade of the ninth batch of 59 directly recruited Deputy Superintendents of Police at the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA) here, he said, "Police powers should be used to safeguard society and not for selfish purposes. As long as you are in public service, you should uphold the Constitution and be lawful".
Police officers should call their subordinates by their names to develop human relationships with their colleagues, he said.
"You should keep gender sensitivity in mind. Right to Information and the media will watch your behaviour," he said.
Out of 59 DSPs, including 21 women officers (DSPs directly recruited through the Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission), one officer is from the Pondicherry police, while 58 are from Andhra Pradesh.
Earlier, Director General of Police B Prasada Rao said that police officers should "respect" poor people and treat them with "empathy".
