SRINAGAR: Angered by Britain’s decision to honour author Salman Rushdie with a knighthood, residents of Srinagar organised demonstrations in different parts of the city.
After Friday prayers, a large number of people assembled outside the Jama Masjid in Nowhatta and raised slogans against Rushdie and the British government. They pelted stones at the police, which lathi-charged the mob. When that did not work, the police fired teargas shells.
A protest march was also taken out at Maisuma after Friday prayers. BA Khan, superintendent of police, North city, said the situation was under control. A partial bandh was also observed in the Valley following a call by the Jamait-ul-Mujhahideen.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people took to the streets in different cities of Pakistan on Friday.
