The gang-rape of two sisters in Badaun evoked mass protests across the country

Precisely a week after two cousins were raped, murdered and hanged from a tree in Badaun, UP woke up to another horrific scene in Sitapur where a minor girl was found hanging from a tree on Tuesday morning. In another alarming incident, a woman judge was sexually assaulted inside her official bungalow in Aligarh. Besides, there have been a series of cases of rape and sexual assaults in the state over the past two days.

However, UP chief minister does not seem to be taking the disturbing rise in such incidents too seriously. "The media is unduly hyping up these cases. Rapes are not happening only in UP but in other states, too," he said when reporters questioned him on this count on Tuesday.

The Lucknow bench of the High Court also rapped the state government on the knuckles on Tuesday for the undue delay in recommending a CBI probe into the Budaun double rape and murder case. Hearing a PIL on the matter, the court ordered the state to provide a copy of the FIR, the post mortem report and of the letter recommending a CBI inquiry at the earliest. CM Akhilesh Yadav had declared two days ago that he was referring the matter to the CBI but the letter for the same is yet to be dispatched.

The hanging of the minor girl in Sitapur district took place in Misrikh area. Police sources said it had not been established whether she was raped before being killed. A family feud was reported to be the cause of the murder. No arrest has been made in the case yet.

In Aligarh, two men sneaked into the official residence of a lady judge serving in the district court on Sunday night when she was alone in the house and fast asleep. They tried to rape her, and injured her with a knife when she resisted. They forced an insecticide down her throat in an attempt to kill her for fear of being identified. Official sources said in her FIR she had named two of her relatives as the accused.

In another horrifying incident, three youngsters threw a class IX student from a train in Bareilly district when she resisted their advances. The girl had boarded the train from Lal Kuan (Uttarakhand) to Gorakhpur.

Finding her alone, the three boys tried to get fresh with her. The girl slapped one of them when she couldn't bear it any more. The furious youngsters pushed her off the train near Bahedi. The injured girl kept lying on the railway track throughout the night and was rescued by the GRP only in the morning. She has filed an FIR against unknown assailants.

As if it were any consolation, the UP DGP AL Bannerji told reporters on Tuesday that a special cell had been set up under three senior woman IPS officers to handle cases of crime against women. The DGP had gone to meet the Badaun victims' families on Tuesday, a full week after the horrific incident which has shaken people across the country.
