APJ Abdul Kalam to confer honorary doctorate to Ujjwal Nikam

The special public prosecutor, who secured death penalty for Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, will be conferred an honorary doctorate by DY Patil Deemed University at a convocation function in Pune.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who secured death penalty for Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, will be conferred an honorary doctorate by DY Patil Deemed University at a convocation function in Pune on Friday.

Former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam will confer the doctorate to Nikam, University sources said today.

Nikam is being honoured for his special work in criminal law by conducting various cases across the state of Maharashtra.

Along with Nikam, two others would also be conferred honorary doctorates. They are Narendra Jadhav and Vijay Bhatkar for their contribution in the fields of social work and computer science respectively.

In his career spanning over two decades, Nikam has secured life sentence for 628 convicts and death penalty for 38, including terrorist Ajmal Kasab who had come from Pakistan along with nine others and killed several people at various places in Mumbai in November 2008. The Bombay high court had recently confirmed capital punishment awarded to Kasab.

Nikam also represented India at a United Nations seminar conducted by the security council recently.
