Arunachal Pradesh is contemplating to promote Parsuram Kund, a holy pilgrimage site in Lohit district, as one of the religious hotspots of the state.

The idea was mooted by state’s Tourism Parliamentary Secretary P D Sona, who recently visited the site to inspect the tourism assets in Parashuram Kund in the wake of the Parasuramkund Mela which starts from mid January, official sources said here today.

"Spiritual tourism can really be a revenue spinner if proper plan is worked out in this area.

Parashum Kund has all the potential to become a spiritual tourism hotspot.

"Pilgrims have already started pouring in despite the fact that the main event is still a month away", the sources said quoting Sona.

While interacting with Lohit Deputy Commissioner and local authorities, he was informed that during the mela more than hundred thousand pilgrims throng the kund and the basic sanitation facilities and accommodation pose a big problem.

He requested the PHED to provide water supply at this site during the mela and create public toilets and other basic facilities for the visitors during these period.

Sona also visited the tourism complex at Parashuram kund which is nearing completion.

The complex is being created to provide accommodation to the pilgrims and other visitors especially during the mela.

“I am quite happy that the complex is coming up well and will be of great help to all the pilgrims who come here", Sona said.

Thousands of pilgrims visit the place in winter every year, especially on the Makara Sankranti day, for a holy dip in the kund.

A fair is held during the mela where wild cows, rare fur-rugs and other curios are brought down by the mountain tribes.

There are also facilities for trekking from Tezu to Glow lake which takes one day, hiking and river rafting and angling on the river Lohit.

While district headquarters Tezu is 21 km from the kund, the nearest railway station is Tinsukia (120km) from where one can take buses via Namsai.

There are also buses available from Sadia.

The nearest airports are Tezu and Dibrugarh in Assam.
