Even a savvy bank manager can make a costly mistake. A manager of an international bank wrote the PIN number of his ATM card on the back of a cover making it very easy for a thief to use his card, which he had stolen, to withdraw Rs65,000 from his account.

Ketan Mehta, 40, works as a manager with JP Morgan bank in Mumbai. After a visit to Dubai, he came to Ahmedabad on work. He hired a cab on Monday morning and asked the driver to take him to Nalanda complex at Mansi circle in Vastrapur.  At around 9.30am, Mehta left his bag in the car and went into the complex. Meanwhile, the thief distracted the driver by dropping currency notes near the car and fled with the bag. The driver was not even aware of the theft.

Mehta came back to the car, found his bag missing and called the police control room. The cops were informed on phone that a bag had been found near a complex just ahead of Swaminarayan temple. When cops took Mehta to that spot, he identified his bag. However, he found Rs30,000 cash, eight ATM cards and one credit card missing from the bag.

SMS alerts soon informed him that Rs65,000 had been withdrawn from his account. The thief had used one of his ATM cards to withdraw the money from five different ATM centres in 45 minutes. In his complaint to Vastrapur police, Mehta told the cops that he had written the PIN number on his card as he used to forget it frequently.
