The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has announced a Bharat Bandh on August 21, to protest against the Supreme Court's ruling on SC/ST reservations. The SC/ST groups in Rajasthan have extended support for the bandh.
Last month, the Supreme Court's ruling allowed states to create sub-categories within the SC and ST groups, saying, "Those who really need it should get priority in reservation."
The Supreme Court's decision on reservations aroused a lot of discussion, and according to reports, the Bharat Bandh's primary goal is to contest and demand the reversal of the court's decision. The protest's main goal is to draw attention to the SC's unfair ruling.
Notably, several social and political groups are anticipated to endorse the Bharat Bandh on Wednesday.
Security measures have been implemented due to the likelihood of violence during the one-day Bharat Bandh. To prepare for this, senior law enforcement officers convened by video conference. At the meeting, senior police officers, district magistrates, and all divisional commissioners examined the security arrangements.
Reason behind Bharat Bandh
According to The Times of India, to prevent tension, police have been asked to increase their presence in all districts in Rajasthan. Furthermore, as stated by state DGP UR Sahoo, the SPs were instructed to maintain law and order throughout the Bharat Bandh.
The DGP told TOI, “We have asked our officials to organise meetings with groups calling for the bandh, as well as with market associations to facilitate better cooperation”.
