The national environment awareness campaign kicked off in the city at Centre for Environment Education (CEE), with a state-level workshop on biodiversity conservation. The programme was inaugurated by AP Singh, IFS member secretary, Gujarat Biodiversity Board (GBB) and Kartikeya Sarabhai of CEE. Rajeeva, chairperson of GBB, made the inaugural address.
Several NGOs, trusts, community-based organisations and eco-clubs working in the field of environment attended the workshop. This year’s theme being biodiversity, the organisations will also be given one-time grant regarding the same.
“Through the grant, the organisations will be encouraged to carry out conservation efforts, training programmes, padyatras, puppet shows or any such programme aimed at improving or maintaining the bio-diversity,” said Vijay Kaushal, programme co-ordinator of forestry unit, CEE. He said that organisations from across the state including Diu and Daman participated in the event.
According to Kaushal, the workshop also aims to build the capacity of these organisations. “Many of these are small NGOs and they have some excellent ideas. Here we teach them about how to make a proposal, how to make a report, etc.”
