An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter Scale jolted Asam on Wednesday morning. The earthquake was recorded at 7:51 am and according to the seismology center, it was centred 43 km west of Tezpur in Assam.
According to the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter Scale originated in Sonitpur of Assam.
Locals in Assam and North Bengal reported the major earthquake around 8 am on Thursday. Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was among those who tweeted about the earthquake.
According to volcanodiscovery.com, moderate shaking probably occurred in Rangapara located 23 km from the epicenter, Udalguri 34 km away, Dhing 38 km away, Tezpur 41 km away, and Khārupatia 44 km away. In Guwahati located 98 km from the epicenter, and Dispur 98 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
There were no immediate reports of loss of lives or property.
