In June last year, Justice MR Shah had entrusted the probe to CBI after Sadik’s brother Shabbir raised doubts about the encounter. The CBI has to find out whether it was genuine or not. However, the agency’s plea before the high court means the probe is likely to take more time to conclude.

Sadiq was allegedly killed in Naroda area of the city on January 13, 2003, by the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB). Shabbir alleged that his brother was killed in the staged encounter conspired by the then DCB chief PP Pandey, DG Vanzara, who is also a prime accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case and who was DCP then, police inspector Tarun Barot and other cops.
