With Trinamool Congress chief and railway minister Mamata Banerjee asking the Centre to send a team to West Bengal, the CPI-M today said that it could visit the state, but any demand for President's Rule was against 'basic democratic principles'.
"Everybody knows who is trying to destabilise the situation in the state. Let a central team come, but they should look at the situation objectively and impartially. They will understand," CPI-M general secretary Prakash Karat, who was here to attend party's state secretariat meeting, told reporters.
On the Trinamool Congress' demand for imposition of president's rule in the state, Karat said, "It goes against basic democratic principles. The Supreme Court has again and again said that the use of Article 356 against an elected government is unconstitutional."
CPI(M) parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha Basudeb Acharya had yesterday described TC's demand for a visit by a central team to the state as 'uncalled for'.
Alleging that Trinamool Congress, in league with Maoists, was responsible for anarchy in the state, Acharya had said that the demand was a move to create a situation so that president's rule could be imposed.
The CPI-M state secretariat meeting would be followed by a two-day state committee meeting beginning tomorrow. The meeting is likely to discuss the prevailing situation in the state and matters related to party organisation.
