Chickengunia scare in Orrisa district

A medical team has rushed to Ganjam in Orissa following reports of an outbreak of chickengunia disease in some areas of the district.

BHUBANESWAR: A medical team has rushed to Ganjam in Orissa following reports of an outbreak of chickengunia disease in some areas of the district, the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Duryodhan Majhi said.

The team had been despatched there to inquire if the disease had surfaced in the Rangeilunda block of the district and take immediate steps, Majhi said.

Seventeen suspected cases had come to the fore in the area who were being treated at present and their blood samples were being sent for examination to a laboratory in Pune, he said adding necessary steps would be taken on the basis of the pathological reports.

"We are trying to find out how it, if it is the same disease, came to Orissa," he said.

The Health and Family Welfare secretary R N Senapati and the director of the department are scheduled to visit the district soon, official sources said.
