The state CID has sought extension of judicial custody of former Karnataka food and civil supplies minister H Halappa by 15 days in connection with a rape case filed against him by his friend's wife.
Halappa was remanded in one-day judicial custody by a local court yesterday after he was arrested by the CID which is probing the case. He was later hospitalised after he complained of chest pain.
"We have filed a petition before the judicial magistrate seeking extension of judicial custody of Halappa by 15 days. However, the orders are yet to passed," DIG (CID) Charan Reddy told PTI.
Jail officials, however, said Halappa, who was admitted to state-run Meggaon hospital last night, "is not in a position to appear before the court today".
Halappa had quit his post on May 2 after a media report claimed he had sexually assaulted his friend's wife at their house in November last at Shimoga, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa's home district.
Halappa's anticipatory bail plea will come up before the court tomorrow.
Chandravathi, wife of financier Venkatesh Murthy, had filed an FIR claiming Halappa had raped her, a charge denied by the former minister who has described it as a political conspiracy by his adversaries.
Police have booked charges of criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement and restraint against Halappa and two of his aides.
