Post-graduate and M.Phil students of the department were not allowed to enter the campus.

Students at the University of Madras agitated against the demotion of Professor Ramu Manivannan, on Wednesday, leading to the university subsequently suspending classes in the public administration and politics department.

Manivannan was the acting head of this department. He was reportedly asked to take administrative action against the students who took part in the liquor prohibition protests in Tamil Nadu. When he refused, he was allegedly demoted. It is likely that the protests will continue till Manivannan is reinstated as HOD.

Post-graduate and M.Phil students of the department were not allowed to enter the campus and were also asked to vacate the hostels. In the evening, post an emergency meeting between the student representatives and the political science department HOD, the order asking them to vacate the hostels was revoked.
