The Central Board of Secondary Education is making key changes for the new academic session, and will now focus on skills-oriented learning to do away with rote learning. From bringing in new subjects to reworked Class 10 board examinations, the 2019-20 session is expected to usher in positive steps for students.
One of the major decisions is that students in Class 10 will have two options when sitting for Mathematics exams: A basic-level test for those who do not wish to pursue it after matriculation and a standard level for those who want to study it at the senior secondary level.
"Introducing this step will mean that the CBSE will conduct two examinations for the subject during boards and students can opt for the level they intend to sit for at the time of submission of List of Candidates (LoC)," said a senior board official. Usually, this process takes place in October-November when affiliate schools send complete lists of students sitting for the boards. The official added, "A lot of students have a phobia for the subject. The main objective is to reduce stress among students which especially increases during Mathematics exams." The other factors like class teaching and syllabus will, however, remain the same.
Additionally, as the board hopes to ready students for the "changing world", it has planned to introduce from the new academic session, three new subjects from Class 9 that can be their sixth optional subject: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Yoga and Early Childhood Educators.
