NEW DELHI: His two-day stay at Tihar jail has so depressed Babubhai Katara, the Bharatiya Janata Party MP, that he has requested doctors to prescribe him sleeping pills. Katara was caught at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport for using the passports of his wife and his son to help two people reach a foreign country.
According to an official from Tihar jail, the MP complained of uneasiness and breathlessness soon after arriving at the jail two days ago. “Katara was taken for a medical check-up but doctors did not find anything wrong,” the official said. “He seems very disturbed and nervous in jail. But then, who would feel comfortable inside a cell?” A local court in New Delhi had sent Katara to judicial custody till May 4.
Senior officials said that doctors have been giving Katara the sleeping pills that he requested. On the first day, he was allowed to sleep in the jail hospital because he felt uneasy in the cell. Senior officials say that they are providing all possible medical help to the MP, but suspect that the medical examinations and Katara’s stay in hospital are ploys to get bail easily.
“If somebody is able to prove in court that he needs medical attention and should be in a hospital, he can get bail very easily,” the officer added. “This is why most politicians who are sent to jail tend to develop a medical condition as soon as they are confined,” said the officer.
Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh police on Wednesday searched the residences of Telangana Rashtra Samithi rebel legislator K Lingaiah in connection with human trafficking case.
A police team went to Chanchalguda jail here, where the legislator was lodged, and took him into custody for further interrogation.
