The post was vacant since the death of Congress leader, and Delhi's former Chief Minister Sheila Dixit on July 20.

Shubhash Chopra became an MLA for the first time in Delhi in 1998 from the Kalkaji Vidhan Sabha constituency and retained his seat for three consecutive terms.

He served as the chief of the Delhi Congress Unit before in 1997.

The decision was made by the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi after holding a meeting with other Congress leaders in Delhi.

With assembly elections just around the corner in Delhi, the Congress also elected cricketer-turned-politician, Kirti Azad,  as the chairman of the party's campaign committee in Delhi.
