Senior party leaders from the state, including former Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Union Minister Preneet Kaur, also met Ahmed over the issue but he denied that they made any complaints.
With an eye on the Lok Sabha polls, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had on December 27 constituted the new Punjab Congress Committee with 14 vice presidents, 35 general secretaries, 61 secretaries and 148-member Executive Committee seeking to accord representation to all sections and regions.
As many as 34 veteran leaders were made permanent invitees to the Executive Committee. The party had also announced 27 new urban and rural district presidents across the state.
However, as soon as the list was out, a virtual rebellion broke out in the Punjab unit of Congress leading to a resignation spree from different districts.
Those rebelling against the list are alleging that Bajwa has packed it with his favourites.
Bajwa, an MP from Gurdaspur had become Punjab PCC chief in March last year replacing Captain Amarinder Singh.
Opposing the list, former ministers Rakesh Pandey, Malkit Singh Birmi and Ashok Prashar Pappi resigned from party posts after a meeting in Ludhiana on Friday. Raising a banner of revolt against the Bajwa, these leaders claimed that they had been "ignored and humiliated".
Lashing out at Bajwa, senior Congress leaders in Moga Vijay Sathi, Jagdarshan Kaur and Tara Singh Sandhu on Thursday decided to resign from state executive and sent their resignation to the party high command.
The leaders complained that Bajwa did not take party seniors into confidence while constituting the mega committee.
Charging Bajwa with indulging in favouritism, Sandhu said they had decided to quit the state committee.
While Punjab Mahila Congress chief Malti Thapar is miffed at "poor representation" to women in the new PPCC, Rajya Sabha MP and former Union Minister Ashwani Kumar had openly taken on Bajwa alleging favouritism in the committee.
Senior most General Secretary of PPCC, Jagmohan Singh Kang had on Tuesday said that he would not go along with Bajwa. Earlier, a senior party leader from Sunam, Aman Arora, had resigned as executive member of the PPCC. He had alleged that Congressmen, who "back-stabbed" the party were "rewarded" with positions in the committee.
