With the Allahabad high court set to pronounce its judgment in the 60-year-old title suit in the Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, Congress today said the party will abide by the verdict.
"From the beginning, Congress has held that the issue should be settled amicably through dialogue. Now when the issue is in court, the party would abide by the court verdict," AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi told reporters in New Delhi.
The Union government has made a strong appeal for communal harmony and peace ahead of the judgement in the title suit to be pronounced on September 24.
Asked about the appeal of the government to maintain equanimity and tranquillity in the aftermath of the judgment, Dwivedi said that it was the "responsibility of the government to take precautions" keeping all aspects in view.
Refusing to comment further on the issue, he said, "The court will take a view and we have to accept that".
Party sources, meanwhile, said that nothing much should be read into the judgment as the case looked set go to the Supreme Court in a natural course as an appeal by one of the aggrieved parties, involved in litigation in the title suit.
A three-judge Special Bench of the high court earlier rejected a petition filed by one Ramesh Chandra Tripathi for deferring the judgement for working out an out-of-court settlement of the issue, saying there was no merit in the application.
