Congress would hold protest demonstrations throughout Uttar Pradesh on February 22 against police lathi charge on party workers here yesterday and will demand dismissal of Mayawati government.

"City and district units of the party would hold demonstrations all over the state on February 22 which would be observed as 'virodh diwas' and would submit memorandums addressed to governor BL Joshi, demanding dismissal of Mayawati government which has been forcefully crushing all voices of dissent," UPCC president Rita Bahuguna Joshi told news persons here today.

Taking a strong exception to the manner in which women activists including the president of the national unit Prabha Thakur and herself were beaten up, Joshi charged the government with infringing on their democratic right to hold peaceful demonstrations.

She also alleged that lady police were not deployed and police used rifle butts to beat up the workers.

To a question on today's verdict on High Courts and Supreme Court directly ordering CBI inquiry without the consent of the state governments, she said she was hopeful that she would get justice in the arson case in which she had been demanding CBI probe.
