Criticising the Congress for the "unfair" treatment meted out to superstar Amitabh Bachchan, the BJP today said it was an "insult" to the art and culture.
"It was not just an insult to Bachchan but it amounts to an insult of arts, culture and our traditions. Besides it is undemocratic," BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar told reporters in Nagpur.
"Bachchan was duly invited for the inauguration of the second phase of the Bandra-Worli Sealink. Congress has taken exception only because the superstar does not enjoy good relations with Sonia Gandhi's family," he said.
Congress could "not digest" Bachchan becoming the brand ambassador of Gujarat and hence is indulging in a hate campaign against an individual, he alleged.
The presence of Bachchan at the inauguration of second phase of the Sea Link a few days back had sparked a controversy with Congress leaders from Mumbai taking objection to chief minister Ashok Chavan sharing platform with the actor who is a brand ambassador for BJP-ruled Gujarat.
On Chavan pleading ignorance about the invitation sent to Bachchan for the function, Javadekar said, "a chief minister is bound to know about the entire function and the dignitaries invited."
Commenting on the performance of UPA-2, Javadekar said it was showing "signs of arrogance".
Congress is not taking into confidence its main allies, ministers in cabinet and forgets about opposition parties. This was not the practice followed during the regime of NDA by then prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, he added.
