Manipur imposed a strict curfew to break the chain of transmission amid the ever surging cases of COVID-19 infections

The Manipur government has imposed a ten-day curfew in Imphal to curb the COVID-19 virus from Sunday (July 18). To make sure the rules are being followed appropriately, security personnel are deployed in the city at various locations.

The state government imposed a strict curfew to break the chain of transmission amid the ever surging cases of COVID-19 infections. Barricades and extra checkpoints were set up on the main roads to the city and its outskirts to regulate the movement of people.

Most people preferred to stay indoors as police and youth clubs at local and village levels warned those violating the restriction. Speaking to ANI, Imphal East Superintendent of Police (SP), Moirangmayum Bishworjit Singh said, "People are obeying the norms imposed and are cooperating this time. They are only coming out for an emergency."

Manipur saw a surge in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant and was forced to announce the lockdown on Friday. Only the essential services, including medical and Covid vaccination, would be available during the curfew period. Responding to the Chief Minister’s call to observe ‘strict curfew’, even shops in the localities and villages had shut their shutters on day one of the curfew.

The state government's order read, "It can be recalled that with the wide prevalence of the Delta variant of COVID-19 in Manipur, the state government has taken these stringent measures to break the chain of transmission, and has decided to impose a total curfew from today July 18 for ten days."
