CPI virtually accused the CPI(M) of playing the big brother in West Bengal by 'unilaterally' running the Left Front.

NEW DELHI: CPI on Wednesday virtually accused the CPI(M) of playing the big brother in West Bengal by 'unilaterally' running the Left Front and reminded the Marxists that they have a bigger responsibility in the state.

"The Left Front government has to function as a government of the Front and not as a one-party government. ... there has to be transparency, mutual consultation on all major issues, including on the development of West Bengal," CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said while releasing the draft
Political Resolution for its 20th Congress scheduled in Hyderabad from March 23-27.

Bardhan said the CPI has taken the same line as that of the Marxists in forging unity among non-Congress and non-BJP parties. The attempt was to evolve an alternative Left and democratic programme.

Referring to the Nandigram episode, Bardhan said his party had been critical of the 'unilateral way' the CPI(M) had dealt with the issue "without consulting and taking other partners into confidence. The differences, however, were mostly sorted out through frank discussions."

Suggesting that the Front should draw lessons from Nandigram, he said though differences arose in the 'complex task' of governance and running it, efforts should be made to solve them within so as to prevent opponents from using them to build an anti-Left campaign throughout the country.
