VELLORE: The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is open to an electoral alliance with the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, party state secretary N. Varadarajan announced on Thursday.
"Political alliances are an electoral necessity that the Left understands clearly. While we do not rule out an alliance with the AIADMK, we are emphatic that there shall be no tie up with any party that has a relationship with the Congress or BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)," he said.
The possibility of the Left supporting or forming a Third Front in the state or in New Delhi is also not ruled out, Varadarajan added.
Varadarajan was addressing journalists in Vellore, 180 km west of Chennai, on the sidelines of a party function.
Last fortnight, Communist Party of India state secretary D. Pandian had welcomed AIADMK leader and former chief minister J Jayalalitha's criticism of attacks at minorities in Orissa.
The CPI and CPI-M have for long had close relations with the DMK, now the ruling party in Tamil Nadu. But the ties got soured after the DMK helped Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to survive a trust vote in parliament in the wake of the Left's aggression over the India-US nuclear deal.
