The three-day meeting, which began this morning, will also finalise the date and venue for the extended Central Committee meeting. Vijayawada is likely to host the meeting.

The CPI(M) Central Committee met here today to review the party's performance in the past two years and finalise its rectification campaign besides discussing the prevailing political scenario in the country.

The three-day meeting, which began this morning, will also finalise the date and venue for the extended Central Committee meeting. Vijayawada is likely to host the meeting.

Party general secretary Prakash Karat and other senior leaders like Sitaram Yechury, SR Pillai, MK Pandhe and Mohd Amin are participating in the meeting.

Sources said the meeting will discuss the mid-term review prepared by the Polit Bureau, which met here yesterday.

The senior leaders are expected to discuss the party's strategy in the past two years and its benefits and shortfalls during the discussions.

Sources said the central leadership may face some tough questions on its relationship with parties like RJD and Samajwadi Party, which "duped the party in the last minute" during the cut motion voting.

"The Party Congress two years ago had set some goals. The mid term review will try to understand whether these goals were achieved. The state committees have already given their reports. These will be discussed," a senior party leader said.

MK Pandhe, a member of the Polit Bureau, said the meeting will discuss political developments in the country.

"We will also finalise the rectification campaign," he said.

The rectification campaign is aimed at identifying "non-Communist behaviour and fraudulent acts of party men besides providing the party workers with a "living culture based on communist values."

The process of the rectification campaign at the political, ideological and organisational level is to remove the wrong trends and shortcomings so that the party emerges more unified and strengthened.

The prevailing political situation, including assembly polls in Bihar and upcoming elections to local bodies in West Bengal, also will come up for discussion.
