Yechury alleged that Congress-led UPA government had 'failed' to check rising prices of essential commodities while pursuing policies of liberalisation which had adversely impacted the livelihood of the common people.

The CPI(M) today said it will continue to oppose policies of the UPA government and give a tough fight to the Congress in Kerala and West Bengal where assembly elections are due next year.

"We will fight the Congress in both states, while continuing to oppose its neo-liberal policies," senior party leader Sitaram Yechury, who was in Kolkata to attend a meeting of party's state committee, told reporters.

"We will fight the neo-liberal policies of the Congress and oppose communalism as decided at the last two CPI(M) party meets," he said.

Yechury alleged that Congress-led UPA government had 'failed' to check rising prices of essential commodities while pursuing policies of liberalisation which had adversely impacted the livelihood of the common people.

Meanwhile, the state CPI(M) began a two-day session during the day to chalk-out remedial steps to strengthen the organisation, review progress of the rectification campaign and efforts to win back the confidence of the electorate, party insiders said.

The rectification campaign was initiated after the reverses suffered by the party in 2009 Lok Sabha election.

Today's meeting was attended by party general secretary Prakash Karat, West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and state Left Front chairman Biman Bose.

The party's future course of action would be finalised at the meeting of the Extended Central Committee to be held in Vijaywada next month.
