In a state where the decreasing numbers of girl child is a cause of worry, a daughter has set an example by performing the last rites of her father. Usually, the last rites of a person are performed by his or her son or by the closest male relative.

But Nidhi, an only child of her parents, performed the last rites of her father Sudhir Thacker. Her father had died of a heart attack on Friday morning at his residence in Maninagar.

Interestingly, Nidhi had also performed the last rites of her mother Bhairvi when she died seven years ago. Nidhi on her part does not believe that she has done anything extraordinary.

"My parents never differentiated between a son and daughter. When they were alive, they brought me up with all the love and care that they could give. For them, I was their son and daughter as well. So it was only natural for me to perform the last rites of my parents," said Nidhi.

She said, she did initially face objection from some of her family members but she did not pay heed to them.

She says she has just followed her parents' instructions.
"My husband and I lived with my father as he was alone. I also have a one year daughter. When I die, I would like my daughter to perform my last rites," she said.
