Police should instill confidence and be more people-friendly, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said today, advocating a overhaul of training for the cops.
"The entire training should change. They should be trained to speak politely. They should instill confidence and be friendly. They should be known for helping out people and not just wielding power.
"There is a need for instilling confidence in people about police. The public should not be afraid of approaching police," she told reporters.
The chief minister said she had put these suggestions before Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna.
"We have also suggested that there should be motorcycle patrolling in narrow streets. These areas are also vulnerable to crimes," she said.
She said she hoped that the women helpline '181' will become operational soon in other parts of the country too.
"Our helpline has so far received 2,000 calls. This number is for all types of calls. Though the helpline is for women in distress, we have been asking callers to approach concerned authorities," she said.
