The Delhi high court today sought suggestions from Non Government Organisations (NGO) about short-term measures for providing shelter to the city's homeless people.

A Division Bench of acting chief justice Madan B Lokur and justice Mukta Gupta asked Human Rights activist Miloon Kothari to visit the shelters and file a report suggesting various measures for the shelters.

The court also directed MCD and NDMC officials to co-operate with Kothari and file the report by February 24, the next date of hearing.

The NGOs have alleged MCD has failed to comply with the court's earlier order to shift the city's homeless people to the shelters.

Earlier, the court had directed the Delhi chief secretary to hold a meeting of officials of all the agencies concerned and draw up a plan to construct 144 permanent shelters for the  homeless across the city as per the Master Plan for Delhi-2021.

The Bench was hearing a petition on the basis of media reports about the demolition of a Pusa Road night shelter in December last and the charge that the city government and the civic bodies were doing nothing to protect the homeless from
biting cold.
