NEW DELHI: Delhi got a glimpse of the upcoming monsoon, as Monday, May 26, turned out to be the rainiest day of the month in last five years.
It started pouring in the capital on early Sunday morning and by Monday morning it received 36.2 mm rainfall, bringing day temperature down by five degrees. The night
temperature too dipped by three degrees.
And there is no letting up as yet. According to the weathermen, the downpour would continue for at least the next three days. “There is low tropospheric cyclone circulation over Haryana which is getting moisture from the Arabian Sea. It would continue to rain for almost 2-3 days before the phenomena starts to weaken,” said the weather officials in the capital.
The study of data from the past five year reveals that it rained 21.3 mm on this day in 2007, 22.9 mm in 2006, 2.2 mm in 2005, 27.6 in 2004 and 5 mm in 2003. The only exception to this kind of downpour was in 2002 and 2001 when it had rained 46.2 mm and 26.2 mm respectively on May 26.
The weathermen also informed that though the rains have brought down the temperature in the capital and adjoining areas, the heavy showers can be bad news for the farmers, as the showers would affect crops.
Senior weather officials also informed that thundershowers would continue in Delhi on Tuesday as well and the day temperature would fall by a few degrees to 32 degrees Celsius.
The weather officials further elaborated that the recent rainfall would have no bearing on the monsoon as these are due to weather disturbances and were not part of the rainy season.
