Delhi mayoral election tomorrow

While Sawhney, the chairman of MCD Education Committee, is the BJP nominee for mayor, Tulsi Ram Sablania of Congress and Hari Chand Kardam of BSP will challenge him.

The election for the post of mayor and deputy mayor of Delhi will be held tomorrow, with ruling BJP candidates Prithvi Raj Sawhney and Rajesh Gehlot all set to romp home.
    
The BJP has an overwhelming majority in the 272-member MCD House. The strength of BJP is 172, followed by Congress (73), BSP (16) and Independents (10). Among the 172 members of BJP, the election of one has been declared null and void by the high court.
    
While Sawhney, the chairman of MCD Education Committee, is the BJP nominee for mayor, Tulsi Ram Sablania of Congress and Hari Chand Kardam of BSP will challenge him.
    
Rajesh Gehlot of BJP, Saranjit Sharma of Congress and Sanjay Gupta of BSP has filed their nomination papers for the post of deputy mayor. The last day of filing of papers was April 26.
    
Yogendra Chandolia and Sarita Choudhary of BJP and Jai Kishan Sharma of Congress have submitted their papers for the three vacant posts of members of the Standing Committee to be nominated by the Corporation, election for which will also be held tomorrow.
    
Sawhney, who represents Janak Puri (South) ward, was also a councillor earlier from 1997-2000 and held various important posts including that of Chairman of MCD Standing Committee.
    
He taught in Jammu College and in different schools of Directorate of Education for 30 years and has been the president of Delhi Adhyapak Parishad.
