Three students tragically lost their lives on Saturday after being trapped in a flooded basement at a coaching centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi. The victims, identified as Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nivin Dalwin from Kerala, were all UPSC aspirants studying at Rau's IAS coaching institute.
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local police found their bodies several hours after the area was submerged in water.
The incident occurred around 7 pm when the Delhi fire department received a distress call about waterlogging at the Rao IAS Study Centre and nearby Karol Bagh area. Reports indicated that two or three students were trapped in the basement. Upon arrival, rescuers found the basement filled with water. Efforts to pump out the water were initially hindered by continuous rainwater flow, but they eventually managed to reduce the water level from 12 feet to eight feet and retrieve the bodies.
Around 30 students were in the coaching centre at the time. Of these, 12 to 14 were rescued and taken to a hospital, while others managed to escape.
The police have completed the rescue operation and are investigating how the water entered the basement and why a class was held there during such conditions. They have detained the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre and registered a criminal case regarding the deaths.
