NEW DELHI: We are with you. That is the message the capital’s caring want to relay to the residents of Jamia Nagar, where two alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) ultras were killed in a police encounter over a month ago.
Led by Jamia Millia Islamia University staff, senior citizens and children of Delhi have decided to come together for the first time to make sure Jamia Nagar residents do not feel left out and targeted.
“We have decided to ask the people of Delhi to form a human chain and walk in Jamia Nagar to make its residents feel comfortable,” a senior faculty member of the university said.
The encounter, in which the alleged IM members were killed, had occurred on September 19, a few days after the Delhi serial blasts. Police claimed the alleged IM members were behind the attack and part of a countrywide network of terrorists.
Many questions have been raised on the encounter since, but Delhi Police continue to maintain it was not fake.
People of Jamia Nagar, on the other hand, say police are targeting the youth of the area. They feel it is a deliberate attempt by the police against Muslims. The residents also complain that every year in the month of Ramzan, Delhi Police carry out an encounter in Jamia Nagar just to prove that the community supports terrorists.
