Under pressure from all political parties, the Centre has agreed to curtail the on-going budget session and end it on March 25 keeping in mind the upcoming assembly elections.
“The opposition parties have represented that they want to be free for campaigning in the elections in West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam.
They wanted the session to end with the scheduled break on March 16, but due to procedural constraints, we have to continue till March 25,” a government official said.
The cabinet committee on parliamentary affairs is expected to take a formal decision on Friday.
The government, to make-up for lost time, is mulling over the option of either convening a short two week session towards the end of May or extending the duration of the monsoon session.
