Tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR for several seconds on Tuesday at around 4:30 pm after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck near India-Pakistan border, IMD said.
The tremors were felt across north India including Chandigarh, parts of Jammu and Kashmir and also some areas in Uttar Pradesh.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its preliminary report that the earthquake of magnitude 6.3 hit Pakistan-India (J&K) Border Region at 4:31 pm.
According to European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake occurred 92-km south-east of Rawalpindi in Pakistan on Tuesday.
While the EMSC earlier estimated quake's intensity to be of 6.1 magnitude, the agency later downgraded it to 5.7 and then 5.5.
The estimated location of the quake's epicentre is also close to the Mangla Dam across the River Jhelum, which is among the largest dams in the world. There is no information on any damage to the structure so far. However, the dam has in the past withstood multiple large earthquakes that have hit the region.
