VIJAYWADA: Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) Registrar Vithalrao Patil on Friday conducted an open inquiry into the Ayesha Meera rape and murder case in the city.
Ayesha Meera, a B.Pharm student, was raped and murdered in her hostel room in the last week of December 2007. Her parents had met SHRC Chairman Mr Justice Subhashan Reddy in Hyderabad yesterday and complained about the lack of progress in the investigation and delay in the arrest of the accused.
Following their complaints, the SHRC Chairman immediately asked Mr Patil to conduct an inquiry into the incident.
Mr Patil, who visited the hostel where the student was raped and murdered, recorded the statements of the hostel students and Ayesha's parents. He also received representations from the public and women's organisations.
He said the inquiry would be conducted on Saturday also. He would submit his report to the SHRC on Monday.
Meanwhile, a large number of people, mostly students and women, resorted to a road blockade under the banner 'Aadarana', a voluntary youth organisation, on the Machilipatnam-Pune national highway at Guntupalli for over 30 minutes, demanding the arrest of the accused and protection to girl students.
