Gill termed Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s efforts for clemency to Balwant Singh Rajoana as perversion of system.

Former Punjab DGP KPS Gill, during whose tenure former chief minister Beant Singh was assassinated here in 1995, termed Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s efforts for clemency to Balwant Singh Rajoana as “perversion of system”.

He said the Akali leaders had been compulsively mixing religion with politics at times to subvert the system. “One fails to find a distinction between the SGPC and the Akali government sometimes”, said the former super cop.

Justifying hanging of Balwant Singh, who has been convicted in the assassination case, Gill said it was a strange situation when the convict wanted to go to the gallows and the state government was going overboard to oppose it.

He recalled that Balwant Singh’s involvement in the bomb blast that killed Beant Singh, demonstrated that militants had penetrated the police force, which had otherwise, fought militancy tooth and nail.
