KOLKATA: The CPI(M) has said its fight against communalism has not been placed on the backburner in its zeal to oppose the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal.
An editorial in party mouthpiece 'Ganasakti' on Saturday said, "Questions are being raised which is the bigger issue before the CPI(M) today, communalism or imperialism? On this question the party has a stand for long that both imperialism and communalism are dangerous and struggle would have to waged against both. We cannot stop the fight against either."
It claimed that the independence, self-reliance and sovereignty of India were in danger following the signing of the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Though the Congress had earlier believed in non-alignment in the fight against imperialism, the party was now tilting towards Washington, it said.
The Congress was out to make India a permanent partner of US imperialism through military and strategic ties and the nuclear deal, it said.
Accusing the BJP of having always been a follower of 'imperialism', it said, "As an alliance, the position takenboth by the NDA and the UPA is the same," it said.
"The principled stand taken by CPI(M) over the Indo-US nuclear deal is not to the liking of a section of the media and the critics of the party. The party never avoids criticism but it should be based on facts," it added.
