A criminal case has been registered against Facebook in Lucknow for propagating a campaign against Mahatma Gandhi.

Amitabh Thakur, an IPS officer of UP cadre, currently studying at IIM Lucknow, has taken up cudgels against this hate group. The case has been registered under various sections of the IPC and the information technology act.

The FIR said that the social networking site was hosting a group called “I hate Gandhi” where abusive language was used against the Mahatma with intent to cause riot.

Before registering the FIR, Thakur had communicated to each one of the hate group members individually to get the objectionable parts removed from the site but it was ignored. Facebook, too, did not take the required action to get the site blocked, officials said.

Facebook Inc has also been accused for providing a platform for dissemination of such material.
