A plastic-making factory was damaged in a fire this morning at Salkia in Howrah district.
The police said 25 fire engies fought for close to two hours to bring the flames under control.
Huge plumes of smoke that stretched far into the sky could be visible from afar.
The extent of damage was yet to be ascertained, firemen on the spot said.
The factory had a stockpile of thermocol and plastic materials.
