A case of cheating and forgery has been registered against unidentified persons on a complaint by senior Congress MP R Sambasiva Rao that his signature was forged on a letter purportedly written by him to party chief Sonia Gandhi.
Rao has said the letter was forged and fabricated to denigrate the Congress party and defame him and was intended to drive a wedge between him and his friends.
Following his complaint, the Pattabhipuram police station here registered a case last night under Sec 420 (cheating), Sec 468 (forgery for cheating) and Sec 471 (using forged document as genuine) of the Indian Penal Code.
In the said letter, the MP had purportedly urged Gandhi to take action against 20 corrupt Congressmen in Guntur district. The list included two Andhra Pradesh ministers, Zilla parishad chairpersons, some MLAs and former legislators.
